Gold Palladium Sputtering

Gold palladium sputtering is a physical vapor deposition technique that coats a specimen with a thin, conductive metal film, making it suitable for scanning electron microscopy and other surface analyses. In a vacuum chamber, an argon plasma generates positively charged ions that bombard a gold-palladium target, ejecting atoms that condense onto the sample as a uniform coating. In biochemistry, this preparation improves image quality for cells, tissues, macromolecular assemblies, and other nonconductive biological specimens by reducing electron charging and enhancing signal stability. Controlled coating thickness helps preserve surface features while supporting high-resolution morphological analysis.

2023

Source: Vy M. Dong and Faben Cruz, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate the concept of a palladium-catalyzed cross coupling. The set-up of a typical Pd-catalyzed cross coupling reaction will be illustrated. Pd-catalyzed cross coupling reactions have had a profound effect on how synthetic chemists create molecules. These reactions have enabled chemists to construct bonds in new and more efficient ways. Such reactions have found widespread...

2013

A method to prepare epitaxial layers of ordered alloys by sputtering is described. The B2-ordered FeRh compound is used as an example, as it displays a metamagnetic transition that depends sensitively on the degree of chemical order and the exact composition of the alloy.

Improving Thermoelectric Properties of Bi2Te3 Thin Films By Manganese Co-Sputtering

2026

A radiofrequency co-sputtering protocol was developed to fabricate manganese-doped Bi2Te3 thin films and evaluate how manganese input influences structural and thermoelectric transport properties. Moderate manganese incorporation improved film uniformity and power-factor-related transport behavior, while higher manganese input increased structural disorder and resistivity.

We report on techniques to micropattern nanoporous gold thin films via stencil printing and photolithography, as well as methods to culture cells on the microfabricated patterns. In addition, we describe image analysis methods to characterize morphology of the material and the cultured cells using scanning electron and fluorescence microscopy techniques.
