Collagen Peptide

Collagen peptides are short chains of amino acids produced by breaking down collagen, the structural protein that supports connective tissues, and they serve as versatile building blocks in bioengineering. Enzymatic or chemical hydrolysis cleaves collagen into smaller fragments, disrupting its native triple-helix structure while retaining sequences that can influence cell adhesion, hydration, and biomaterial properties. Researchers incorporate collagen peptides into hydrogels, coatings, and porous scaffolds to support cell attachment and tissue-like environments, including systems for skin, bone, and cartilage research. Their tunable composition, biocompatibility, and ability to combine with synthetic or natural polymers make them useful for regenerative materials and controlled biomedical design.

2023

Collagen is another widely used biomaterial that has found popularity in commercial applications, such as photography. Collagen has more recently been used in tissue engineering applications, by creating hydrogels that provide structure to engineered tissue. This video introduces collagen as a biomaterial, demonstrates how it is harvested from porcine skin, and shows how the material is used to create a hydrogel for tissue engineering applications. Finally, several applications of the material...

Recombinant Collagen I Peptide Microcarriers for Cell Expansion and Their Potential Use As Cell Delivery System in a Bioreactor Model

2018

We propose a cell expansion protocol on macroporous microcarriers and their use as delivery system in a perfusion bioreactor to seed a decellularized tissue matrix. We also include different techniques to determine cell proliferation and viability of cells cultured on microcarriers. Furthermore, we demonstrate functionality of cells after bioreactor cultures.
