Metabolic Heterogeneity

Metabolic heterogeneity is the variation in metabolic activity, pathway use, and energy demands among cells within the same tissue, culture, or engineered system. It arises when differences in gene expression, nutrient availability, oxygen gradients, mitochondrial function, or local signaling cause neighboring cells to process substrates and produce metabolites differently. In bioengineering, characterizing this variation helps researchers design more realistic tissue models, optimize cell cultures and bioreactors, and predict how engineered tissues respond to changing conditions. Accounting for metabolic heterogeneity can improve the reproducibility of biomaterials and organoid systems while revealing cell-specific vulnerabilities relevant to disease modeling, drug development, and personalized therapies.

Zebrafish represent a powerful vertebrate model that has been under-utilised for metabolic studies. Here we describe a rapid way to measure the in vivo metabolic profile of developing zebrafish that allows the comparison of different mitochondrial function parameters between genetically or pharmacologically manipulated embryos, thereby increasing the applicability of this organism.

What is Metabolism?

2019

Overview Metabolism represents all of the chemical activity in a cell, including reactions that build molecules (anabolism) and those that break molecules down (catabolism). Anabolic reactions require energy, whereas catabolic reactions provide it. Thus, metabolism describes how cells transform energy through a variety of chemical reactions, which are often made more efficient with the help of enzymes. Metabolism Is the Sum of All of the Chemical Reactions That Take Place in an Organism

Heterogeneous Catalysis

2026

Heterogeneous catalysis involves a catalyst in a different phase from the reactants. It is a process where the catalyst and the reactants are in distinct phases, typically solid and gas or liquid. Most heterogeneous catalysts are metals, metal oxides, or acids. The list includes transition metals like iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), tungsten (W), silver (Ag), and copper (Cu). These metals possess partially vacant d orbitals that...

HKUST-1 as a Heterogeneous Catalyst for the Synthesis of Vanillin

2016

The conversion of trans-ferulic acid to vanillin was achieved by heterogeneous catalysis. HKUST-1 was employed in this synthesis and the essential step in the catalytic process was the generation of unsaturated metal sites. Thus, when the catalyst was activated under vacuum, full vanillin conversion (yield of 95%) was obtained.
