Trabecular Thickness

Trabecular thickness is a quantitative measure of the average width of individual struts and plates within cancellous, or spongy, bone, making it an important indicator of bone microarchitecture. In bioengineering, researchers typically estimate it from three-dimensional micro-computed tomography or histological images by segmenting mineralized tissue and calculating local distances across the trabecular network. Alongside trabecular number, spacing, and connectivity, this parameter helps characterize how bone structure changes under disease, loading, aging, or treatment. Measurements of trabecular thickness support the design and evaluation of bone scaffolds, implant interfaces, and engineered tissue models intended to reproduce native mechanical and biological function.

Trabecular meshwork (TM) migration into Schlemm’s canal space can be induced by acute pressure elevation by ophthalmodynamometer, and observed by spectral domain optical coherence tomography. The goal of this method is to quantify the morphometric response of the living outflow tract to acute pressure elevation in living tissues in situ.

Here we describe a cost-effective technique for organotypic culture of adult porcine retina for seven days. Briefly, a sterile filter paper was used to lift the neural retina off from the RPE and place photoreceptor side up on an insert raised by a custom-made stand.

Lymphedema Ultrasonography: A Technique to Measure the Change in Thickness of an Affected Tissue

This video utilizes ultrasonography for diagnosis and follow-up tests to determine treatment efficacy of Progressive Resistance Exercise (PRE) in breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). Ultrasonography can be applied effectively to ensure diagnosis and treatment of lymphedema.

Outer-Boundary Assisted Segmentation and Quantification of Trabecular Bones by an Imagej Plugin

2018

We present a workflow for segmenting and quantifying trabecular bones for 2D and 3D images based on the bone's outer boundary using an ImageJ plugin. This approach is more efficient and accurate than the current manual hand-contouring approach, and provides layer-by-layer quantifications, which are not available in current commercial software.
