Fossa Sulcus Foramen

Fossa, sulcus, and foramen are anatomical terms describing surface features of bones and other organs: a fossa is a depression, a sulcus is a groove, and a foramen is an opening or passage. These structures arise through developmental shaping and remodeling, and their form reflects function by providing space for adjacent tissues, guiding tendons or vessels, or allowing nerves and blood vessels to pass through bone. In biology and anatomy, recognizing these features helps identify organs and skeletal landmarks, interpret medical images, and describe the location of muscles, nerves, and vessels. Their precise relationships are also important in comparative anatomy, clinical assessment, and surgical planning.

This protocol describes a procedure to track the evolution of mesial network measures in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients. It is based on the combination of intracranial recordings with a novel numerical technique for data analysis. Specifically, we present a protocol for network analyses of foramen ovale recordings.

Lateral Molar Approach-Driven Transoral Endoscopic Procedure for Benign Infratemporal Fossa Tumor Resection

2025

Here, we present a protocol to resect benign infratemporal fossa tumors via an endoscopic-assisted transoral lateral molar approach with low-temperature plasma ablation and intraoperative mandibular nerve monitoring. This minimally invasive technique prioritizes anatomical preservation, functional recovery, and avoidance of external scarring, demonstrating feasibility for well-demarcated lesions ≤4 cm in diameter.

The closure of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a catheter-based intervention to prevent PFO-associated stroke. The PFO-occlusion device is advanced through the femoral vein and deployed across the interatrial septum using transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and fluoroscopic guidance. The following protocol provides a step-by-step guide for the PFO-closure intervention using a double-disc device.

Visualization of the Superior Ocular Sulcus during Danio rerio Embryogenesis

2019

Here, we present a standardized series of protocols to observe the superior ocular sulcus, a recently-identified, evolutionarily-conserved structure in the vertebrate eye. Using zebrafish larvae, we demonstrate techniques necessary to identify factors that contribute to the formation and closure of the superior ocular sulcus.

The Supraclavicular Fossa Ultrasound View for Central Venous Catheter Placement and Catheter Change Over Guidewire

The overall goal is to enable clinicians to insert a central venous catheter under real-time ultrasound guidance via the right supraclavicular fossa view of the lower part of the superior vena cava. This view is useful for different catheter insertion sites, thrombosis detection before insertion and ultrasound guided correction of misplaced catheters.
