Mesophiles Optimal Growth

Mesophiles are microorganisms that grow best at moderate temperatures, typically between 20 and 45°C, making their optimal growth important in environmental, industrial, and medical biology. Their growth depends on temperature-sensitive enzyme activity, membrane fluidity, nutrient transport, and protein stability, which together support efficient metabolism within this range. Many soil microbes, food-associated organisms, and microorganisms living in or on humans are mesophiles, with some growing near body temperature. Understanding mesophiles’ optimal growth conditions helps researchers culture and identify organisms, manage food fermentation and preservation, study microbial ecology, and evaluate how temperature influences biological processes.

Flue gas from power plants is a cheap CO2 source for algal growth. We have built prototype "flue gas to algal cultivation" systems and described how to scale up the algal cultivation process. We have demonstrated the use of a mass-transfer bio-reaction model to simulate and to design the optimal operation of flue gas for the growth of Chlorella sp. in algal photo-bioreactors.

Visualizing and measuring root growth in situ is extremely challenging. We present a customizable rhizobox method to track root development and proliferation over time in response to nutrient enrichment. This method is used to analyze maize genotypic differences in root plasticity in response to an organic nitrogen source.
