Dye Retention

Dye retention is the persistence of a colored or fluorescent dye within cells, tissues, or biological compartments, providing a measurable signal for studying cellular behavior. Retention depends on dye uptake, intracellular binding or trapping, membrane integrity, and the balance between transport, metabolism, and leakage; researchers quantify the remaining signal after washing or defined incubation periods. In cancer research, these measurements can help assess cell viability, proliferation, membrane damage, drug responses, and the distribution of labeled tumor cells or tissues. Standardized dye-retention assays support comparisons among cancer models and treatment conditions, while imaging-based measurements can reveal spatial differences within heterogeneous tumors.

Determination of the Calcium Retention Capacity of Isolated Mitochondria

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure to assess mitochondrial calcium retention capacity by monitoring real-time changes in fluorescence as mitochondria uptake calcium. This assay is useful for studying mitochondrial function and calcium-related processes, including apoptosis and neurodegenerative diseases.

Our goals were to design, manufacture and test ferromagnetic stents for endothelial cell capture. Ten stents were tested for fracture and 10 more stents were tested for retained magnetism. Finally, 10 stents were tested in-vitro and 8 more stents were implanted in 4 pigs to show cell capture and retention.

Soil Core Sample Collection for Water Retention Property Analysis

Source:Alessia J. Marchesan1, Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez11Renewable Resources, University of Alberta. This video demonstrates the technique for collecting a soil sample for hydraulic property analysis. The sampling area is cleared, and the top crust is evacuated. The sampling ring is then placed into the soil to collect the sample. The ring with the sample is then cleaned, labeled, packed, and transferred undisturbed for analysis.

FM Dyes in Vesicle Recycling

2023

FM dyes are a class of fluorescent molecules that has found important use in studying the vesicle recycling process. By virtue of a chemical structure, these molecules can insert themselves into the outer leaflet of phospholipid bilayer membranes. After membrane insertion, they are internalized into the cell via endocytosed vesicles, and released when these vesicles recycle back to the membrane. Since, these dyes fluoresce strongly in the hydrophobic environment within membranes and weakly in...
