Bump Trap Usage

Bump trap usage refers to employing a protective vessel in a chemical apparatus to control sudden boiling, foaming, or liquid carryover during processes such as vacuum evaporation and distillation. Placed between the reaction or sample flask and the condenser or vacuum line, the trap provides space for rapidly expanding vapor and entrained liquid to separate, helping prevent material from entering the pump or contaminating connected equipment. Proper use supports smoother solvent removal, protects vacuum systems, reduces sample loss, and improves experimental safety. Bump traps are especially valuable when reduced pressure, concentrated solutions, or vigorous boiling increases the risk of uncontrolled bumping.

Social Traps

2020

Social traps are negative situations where people get caught in a direction or relationship that later proves to be unpleasant, with no easy way to back out of or avoid. The concept was orignally introduced by John Platt who applied psychology to Garrett Hardin's "Tragedy of the Commons", where in New England herd owners could let their cattle graze in the common ground. This situation seems like a good idea, but an individual could have an advantage. If they owned more cows, the larger...

Source: Vy M. Dong and Jan Riedel, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA A Dean-Stark trap is a special piece of glassware, which allows the collection of water during a reaction through an azeotropic distillation. The desire to collect water from a reaction can have various reasons. It can drive the equilibria in reactions, where water is formed as a byproduct. According to Le Chatelier's principle, a change in temperature, pressure, concentration, or volume will cause...
