Gold-plated Probes

Gold-plated probes are analytical and electrochemical sensing components with working surfaces coated by a thin layer of gold, combining a conductive substrate with a chemically resistant interface. The gold coating transfers electrons between the probe and sample, while its stable surface can support adsorption or attachment of molecular recognition species and can be cleaned or modified for particular measurements. In chemistry, these probes support electrochemical detection, surface characterization, and biosensing, where coating thickness, surface condition, and contact with the solution influence signal quality, selectivity, and reproducibility.

A protocol is provided to select structure-switching aptamers for small molecule targets based on a tunable stringency magnetic bead selection method. Aptamers selected with structure-switching properties are beneficial for assays that require a conformational change to signal the presence of a target, such as the described gold nanoparticle assay.
