Ion Size

Ion size is the effective radius of an atom or group of atoms carrying a net electric charge, and it helps explain how ions interact in chemical systems. It reflects the balance between nuclear attraction and electron repulsion: cations formed by electron loss usually become smaller, whereas anions formed by electron gain become larger; size also varies with electron shells and nuclear charge. Comparing ionic radii, especially among isoelectronic ions, supports predictions of periodic trends, bond character, crystal structures, lattice energy, solubility, coordination compounds, and chemical reactivity.

Trends in Lattice Energy: Ion Size and Charge

An ionic compound is stable because of the electrostatic attraction between its positive and negative ions. The lattice energy of a compound is a measure of the strength of this attraction. The lattice energy (ΔHlattice) of an ionic compound is defined as the energy required to separate one mole of the solid into its component gaseous ions. For the ionic solid sodium chloride, the lattice energy is the enthalpy change of the process: Conventions Here, the convention is used where the ionic...

The determination of the solution structure of a protein by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) requires monodisperse samples. Here, we present two possibilities to ensure minimal delays between sample preparation and data acquisition: online size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and online ion-exchange chromatography (IEC).

The Anchoring-and-Adjustment Heuristic

In order to make good decisions, we use our knowledge and our reasoning. Often, this knowledge and reasoning is sound and solid. However, sometimes, we are swayed by biases or by others manipulating a situation. For example, let’s say you and three friends wanted to rent a house and had a combined target budget of $1,600. The realtor shows you only very run-down houses for $1,600 and then shows you a very nice house for $2,000. Might you ask each person to pay more in rent to get the $2,000...
