Transdermal Testing

Transdermal testing is the evaluation of how substances, typically medicines, pass through the skin and whether a patch, gel, or other formulation can deliver a reliable dose. It commonly measures movement across the stratum corneum, the skin’s principal barrier, using controlled exposure conditions and analytical assays to quantify permeation, absorption, and release over time. In clinical development, these assessments help compare formulations, optimize dose delivery, identify factors that affect performance, and support safety and efficacy decisions before or alongside human studies. The results inform noninvasive therapies designed to provide sustained systemic treatment while avoiding gastrointestinal degradation.

Transdermal Drug Delivery Systems

2026

Transdermal drug delivery systems (TDDS) enable the controlled release of drugs across the skin into systemic circulation. They are particularly advantageous for drugs with short half-lives or narrow therapeutic indices, as they maintain consistent plasma concentrations and reduce the risk of subtherapeutic or toxic levels.TDDS are categorized into monolithic, reservoir, and mixed systems. Monolithic systems embed the drug in a polymer matrix, where diffusion governs release. Reservoir systems...

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the ideal marker for assessing kidney function. However, the standard measurement method using inulin injection with serial blood and urine analysis is impractical. This article delineates a practical method to measure GFR transdermally in piglets.

Anxiety Testing

Anxiety is a commonly observed behavioral disorder that stems from fear. It is described as increased restlessness, or unpleasant feelings of fear over anticipated events. Experimenters often use rodent models to better understand anxiety disorders in humans. They use different paradigms, like exposing rodents to bright spaces or loud sounds, which are known to induce fear. These tests combined with other interventions such as surgery or drug-administration may assist researchers in pinpointing...
