Cementation Media Diffusion

Cementation media diffusion is the movement of reactive species from a cementation medium into a material surface, enabling controlled modification of its composition and properties. In thermochemical treatment, elevated temperature creates a concentration gradient that drives species such as carbon into steel, where surface reactions and solid-state diffusion form a compositionally enriched case; treatment time, temperature, and medium characteristics influence penetration depth. This process is central to carburizing and related surface-hardening methods used in engineering components exposed to wear, friction, or contact stress. By combining a hard outer layer with a tougher interior, cementation media diffusion can improve service life without altering the bulk material as extensively.

Hydration of Cement

2024

Hydration of cement is a chemical reaction between cement particles and water. This process occurs primarily through two mechanisms: through-solution and topochemical. In the through-solution process, anhydrous compounds dissolve into their constituents, hydrates form in the solution, and then precipitate from the supersaturated solution. The topochemical process involves solid-state reactions at the cement particle surface. The through-solution process dominates the topochemical process at the...

Soundness of Cement

2024

The soundness of cement refers to the ability of cement paste to retain its volume after setting. Unsound cement can lead to expansion and structural damage due to the presence of free lime, magnesia, and calcium sulfate. Free lime hydrates very slowly, expanding and causing unsoundness, which is difficult to detect because it intercrystallizes with other compounds. Magnesia also reacts with water, forming crystals that can disrupt the cement's structure. Calcium sulfate can create ettringite,...

Cell Membranes and Diffusion In order to function, cells are required to move materials in and out of their cytoplasm via their cell membranes. These membranes are semipermeable, meaning that certain molecules are allowed to pass through, but not others. This movement of molecules is mediated by the phospholipid bilayer and its embedded proteins, some of which act as transport channels for molecules that otherwise would not be able to pass through the membrane, such as ions and carbohydrates.
