Laser Geometry Capture

Laser Geometry Capture is a measurement technique that records the shape and spatial dimensions of physical objects or environments using laser light. In engineering, a scanner directs laser beams across a surface and determines distance from the returned signal, often combining successive measurements into a three-dimensional point cloud. This digital representation supports dimensional inspection, CAD reconstruction, reverse engineering, robotic guidance, and documentation of built or manufactured structures. By capturing complex geometry without extensive contact measurement, it can improve efficiency and reveal deviations from design intent, making it valuable for quality control and engineering analysis.

In this video-article we present a method for isolating single or multiple Drosophila da neurons from third instar larvae using the infrared capture (IR) class of Laser Capture Microdissection (LCM). RNA obtained from the isolated neurons can be readily used for downstream applications including qRT-PCR or microarray analyses.

Control of Cell Geometry through Infrared Laser Assisted Micropatterning
