Polymer Matrix Embedding

Polymer matrix embedding is a materials-engineering process in which fibers, particles, or other components are surrounded and held within a polymer resin to form a consolidated composite. During curing or solidification, the matrix flows around the embedded phase and hardens, while adhesion at the interface transfers applied loads from the polymer to the reinforcement and helps preserve its arrangement. This approach produces lightweight materials whose stiffness, strength, toughness, thermal behavior, or dimensional stability can be tailored by selecting the polymer, reinforcement, orientation, and processing conditions. It supports applications ranging from structural components and protective parts to electronic packaging and engineered biomedical devices.

The word polymer is derived from the Greek words “poly” which means “many” and “mer” which means “parts”. Polymers are long chains of molecules composed of repeating units of smaller molecules, known as monomers. They either occur naturally, such as DNA and proteins, or can be constructed synthetically, like plastics. They have varied structural characteristics, such as linear chains, branched chains, or complex networks, that contribute to the properties that they exhibit. Additionally,...
