B-scan Alignment

B-scan alignment is the process of orienting a two-dimensional brightness-mode ultrasound scan so that its imaging plane, landmarks, and probe position correspond accurately to the target anatomy. The system converts returning sound echoes into brightness values, while controlled probe placement and adjustment of the scan angle help produce a consistent cross-sectional view and improve comparison between images. In immunology and infection research, reliable alignment supports visualization and measurement of tissue changes associated with inflammation, edema, or localized infection, helping researchers track disease progression and evaluate responses to experimental treatments.

The analytical ultracentrifuge (AUC) sample cell holds sample and reference buffer and during experiments and is exposed to high vacuum and rotor speeds up to 60,000 rpm. This video will demonstrate the rigorous attention to detail necessary for assembly, loading and alignment of this very important component of an AUC experiment.

Leaky Scanning

During most eukaryotic translation processes, the small 40S ribosome subunit scans an mRNA from its 5' end until it encounters the first start AUG codon. The large 60S ribosomal subunit then joins the smaller one to initiate protein synthesis. The location of the translation initiation is largely determined by the nucleotides near the start codon as there may be multiple translation initiation sites present on the mRNA. Marilyn Kozak discovered that the sequence RCCAUGG (where R stands for...

Design Example: Alignment of a Road Line Using GIS

2025

The alignment of a road line using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a critical process in civil engineering, combining advanced technology with practical decision-making. This methodology begins with the collection of geospatial data, including information on land cover, geomorphology, drainage patterns, slope, and contour details. Such data is typically acquired through satellite imagery and GIS tools, offering a comprehensive understanding of the terrain.Once the data is gathered, it...
