Aortic Diameter

Aortic diameter is the measured width of the aorta, the body’s largest artery, and is an important indicator of vascular health. Clinicians assess it at specific anatomical segments using echocardiography, ultrasound, computed tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging, while accounting for factors such as age, body size, and measurement location. Enlargement can reflect weakening of the aortic wall and may indicate an aneurysm, whereas changes over time can signal progression and increased risk of rupture or dissection. In medicine, serial diameter measurements support screening, diagnosis, risk assessment, treatment planning, and follow-up for patients with suspected or known aortic disease.

2017

Full-root aortic valve replacement by stentless aortic xenograft is a viable option in patients with small aortic roots. We describe, a technique for the full-root implantation of stentless aortic xenografts, with emphasis on the management of the proximal suture line and coronary anastomoses, and discuss its limitations and alternative options.

Angiogenesis, the sprouting of blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature, is associated with both natural and pathological processes. Here we demonstrate an aortic ring assay that allows angiogenic potentiators and inhibitors to be directly added to aortic rings in culture. Sprouting and neovessel outgrowth can be determined by inspecting the aortic rings over a period of 6-12 days.

Transverse aortic constriction (TAC) in the mouse is a commonly used experimental model to study mechanisms underlying cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure development. Here, we describe procedures to constrict the aorta to create a reproducible degree of cardiac hypertrophy in mice.

A New Murine Model of Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm Repair

Histological and biochemical modifications after aneurysm endograft exclusion are still unclear. We describe a new model of endograft implantation on a murine aneurysm. Through thrombus analysis with and without persistant circulating blood stream interface, and new endovascular biomaterials evaluation, this model will help to better understand endovascular aneurysm exclusion pathobiology.

Propeller Characterization: Variations in Pitch, Diameter, and Blade Number on Performance

2023

Source: Shreyas Narsipur, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC A propeller is a twisted airfoil, where the angle of the chord changes with respect to the location, along the radial station, as shown in Figure 1. Propellers are widely used in aircraft and watercraft propulsion systems thereby necessitating detailed characterizations of propellers to design high performance vehicles. Figure 1. Chord, thickness, and pitch at a radial station. One of...
