Genetic Heterogeneity

Genetic heterogeneity is the presence of different genetic changes that produce the same disease or a similar clinical phenotype, an important concept in medical diagnosis and research. It arises through locus heterogeneity, in which variants in different genes cause a condition, and allelic heterogeneity, in which distinct variants within one gene produce related effects. This variation can influence disease onset, severity, progression, and responses to treatment. Recognizing genetic heterogeneity supports more accurate genetic testing, improves interpretation of patient results, and helps guide personalized medicine by linking specific molecular causes with appropriate monitoring and therapeutic strategies.

Heterogeneous Catalysis

2026

Heterogeneous catalysis involves a catalyst in a different phase from the reactants. It is a process where the catalyst and the reactants are in distinct phases, typically solid and gas or liquid. Most heterogeneous catalysts are metals, metal oxides, or acids. The list includes transition metals like iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), tungsten (W), silver (Ag), and copper (Cu). These metals possess partially vacant d orbitals that...

2016

The conversion of trans-ferulic acid to vanillin was achieved by heterogeneous catalysis. HKUST-1 was employed in this synthesis and the essential step in the catalytic process was the generation of unsaturated metal sites. Thus, when the catalyst was activated under vacuum, full vanillin conversion (yield of 95%) was obtained.

2011

Here we describe a method to quantify molecular heterogeneity in histological sections of tumor material using quantitative immunofluorescence, image analysis, and a statistical measure of heterogeneity. The method is intended for use in clinical biomarker development and analysis.

Single-Cell Western Blotting to Determine Cell Heterogeneity

2025

The video describes a single-cell western blotting technique that identifies the composition of individual cells captured on a single-cell western blotting chip in a heterogeneous suspension. The technique detects the fluorescence intensity of the fluorophore tagged to a protein marker specific to the target cell.

Genetic Crosses

2023

To dissect genetic processes or create organisms with novel suites of traits, scientists can perform genetic crosses, or the purposeful mating of two organisms. The recombination of parental genetic material in the offspring allows researchers to deduce the functions, interactions, and locations of genes. This video will examine how genetic crosses were influential in developing Mendel's three laws of inheritance, which form the basis of our understanding of genetics. One genetic crossing...
