Ileal Conduit

An ileal conduit is a type of urinary diversion that uses a short segment of the small intestine to create a new pathway for urine after the bladder has been removed or can no longer function normally. During the procedure, surgeons connect the ureters to the isolated ileal segment, which carries urine through an abdominal stoma into an external collection pouch. This conduit provides continuous, noncontinent drainage and requires ongoing stoma and skin care. It is commonly used after radical cystectomy for bladder cancer and in selected patients with severe bladder dysfunction, offering a reliable reconstruction when native urinary storage or outflow is not possible.

Source: Lee, Y., et.al. Transplantation of Schwann Cells Inside PVDF-TrFE Conduits to Bridge Transected Rat Spinal Cord Stumps to Promote Axon Regeneration Across the Gap. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the use of a piezoelectric polymer conduit seeded with Schwann cells to promote axon regeneration in a transected rat spinal cord. The conduit provides structural guidance, while its bioelectric properties stimulate neurite outgrowth. Schwann cells within the conduit secrete...

Blood exposure to polymeric blood conduits initiates the foreign body reaction that has been implicated in clinical complications. Here, the Chandler Loop Apparatus, an experimental tool mimicking blood perfusion through these conduits, is described. Appendage of recombinant CD47 results in decreased evidence of the foreign body reaction on these conduits.
