Skin Lesion Segmentation

Skin lesion segmentation is the process of identifying and outlining a lesion within a clinical or dermoscopic image, creating a region of interest for further analysis. It typically uses image-processing or machine-learning methods to distinguish lesion pixels from surrounding skin through differences in color, texture, intensity, and spatial structure, producing a precise boundary or mask. In medicine, segmentation supports the assessment of lesion size, shape, asymmetry, and evolution, which can aid skin cancer screening and clinical decision-making. It also provides standardized image data for computer-aided diagnosis, treatment planning, and research on algorithm performance across diverse skin types and imaging conditions.

The protocol describes a new method to disaggregate human tissues and to create autologous micro-grafts that, combined with collagen sponges, give rise to human bio-complexes ready to use in the treatment of skin lesions. Further, this system preserves cell viability of micro-grafts at different times after mechanical disaggregation.
