Intersection Over Union

Intersection over Union (IoU) is a metric that measures how closely two regions or sets overlap, making it important for evaluating predictions against reference data. It is calculated by dividing the area of intersection between the predicted and ground-truth regions by the area of their union, producing a score from 0 to 1. In medicine, IoU commonly assesses image-segmentation and object-detection models that identify tumors, organs, lesions, or other anatomical structures in scans. Higher IoU indicates closer spatial agreement and helps researchers compare algorithms, quantify diagnostic-image performance, and monitor improvements in computer-assisted analysis.
