Multimodal Image Fusion

Multimodal image fusion is a computational technique that combines complementary information from images acquired with different modalities or settings into one representation, helping clinicians and researchers view anatomy and function together. It first aligns images through spatial registration, then integrates their pixel-, feature-, or decision-level information using methods such as weighted intensity fusion, multiscale transforms, or deep-learning models. In medicine, fusing CT with MRI or PET can support lesion localization, tissue characterization, treatment planning, and image-guided intervention by linking structural detail with biochemical or functional signals. Results depend on acquisition quality, accurate registration, and validation against clinical needs.

The combination of multiple imaging modalities is often necessary to gain a comprehensive understanding of pathophysiology. This approach utilizes phantoms to generate a differential transformation between the coordinate systems of two modalities, which is then applied for co-registration. This method eliminates the need for fiducials in production scans.

This protocol describes the synthesis of biofunctionalized Prussian blue nanoparticles and their use as multimodal, molecular imaging agents. The nanoparticles have a core-shell design where gadolinium or manganese ions within the nanoparticle core generate MRI contrast. The biofunctional shell contains fluorophores for fluorescence imaging and targeting ligands for molecular targeting.
