Fluorescent Protein Visualization

Fluorescent protein visualization is a method for labeling and observing specific cells, proteins, or cellular structures through genetically encoded fluorescent proteins, making biological organization visible in living systems. These proteins emit light at defined wavelengths after excitation, and researchers detect the resulting signal with fluorescence microscopy; fusion to a protein of interest or expression under a cell-specific promoter determines where fluorescence appears. In neuroscience, the approach reveals neuronal morphology, axonal projections, synaptic organization, and changes in cellular activity when paired with suitable fluorescent indicators. Its compatibility with live imaging supports studies of neural development, circuit connectivity, and disease mechanisms over time.

Formation of protein complexes in vivo can be visualized by bimolecular fluorescence complementation. Interaction partners are fused to complementary parts of fluorescent tags and transiently expressed in tobacco leaves, resulting in a reconstituted fluorescent signal upon close proximity of the two proteins.
