Hemostatic Forceps

Hemostatic forceps are hinged surgical instruments designed to grasp and compress blood vessels or tissue, helping control bleeding during procedures. Their serrated jaws close through finger rings and lock with a ratchet, maintaining pressure without continuous hand force. In neuroscience and neurosurgery, clinicians use them for hemostasis in delicate operations involving the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves, although instrument selection must match tissue fragility and the surgical task. Proper use can improve visualization, reduce blood loss, and support precise microsurgical manipulation.

We describe the simplest protocol to prepare biodegradable medical glue that has an effective hemostatic ability. TAPE is a water-immiscible supramolecular aggregate prepared by mixing of tannic acid, a ubiquitous compound found in plants, and poly(ethylene) glycol, yielding a 2.5 times greater water-resistant adhesion compared with commercial fibrin glue.

Chronic catheterization of blood vessels in the rat is often required for administration of substances, obtain blood sample over a period of time or for direct conscious blood pressure measurements. Femoral arterial catheterization of the rat and corresponding measurements of blood pressure in the conscious animal will be demonstrated.
