Insect Neuroscience

Insect neuroscience is the study of nervous systems in insects, including how neural circuits generate sensation, movement, learning, and behavior. Insect neurons process sensory signals through electrical impulses and chemical synapses, while the brain and ventral nerve cord integrate information to coordinate responses to environmental cues. Researchers examine these mechanisms using electrophysiology, imaging, behavioral experiments, and genetic tools to connect cellular activity with actions such as navigation, communication, and feeding. Because insects have compact, accessible nervous systems and well-defined behaviors, they provide valuable models for investigating neural computation, circuit organization, sensory processing, and the biological basis of behavior.

By investigating the influences of genes, signaling molecules, and cellular morphology, researchers in this field uncover crucial insights into normal brain development and function, as well as the root causes of many pathological conditions. This video introduction to the fascinating world of cellular and molecular neuroscience begins with a timeline of landmark studies, from the...

Osmoregulation in Insects

2019

Malpighian tubules are specialized structures found in the digestive systems of many arthropods, including most insects, that handle excretion and osmoregulation. The tubules are typically arranged in pairs and have a convoluted structure that increases their surface area. Malpighian tubules extend from the digestive tract, typically the area between the midgut and hindgut, into the hemolymph—a mixture of blood and interstitial fluid found in insects and other arthropods, as well as most...
