Neuronal Cell Separation

Neuronal cell separation is the process of isolating neurons from mixed neural tissues or cell cultures to obtain populations suitable for study. It typically combines tissue dissociation with methods that distinguish cells by physical properties, such as size or density, or by molecular markers using techniques including density-gradient centrifugation, immunomagnetic selection, or fluorescence-activated cell sorting. By enriching neuronal populations and reducing contamination from glial or other cell types, the approach enables more focused analysis of neuronal morphology, gene expression, electrophysiology, and responses to injury or drugs. In neuroscience research, reliable separation supports investigations of development, neural circuit function, disease mechanisms, and potential therapeutic strategies.

Overview Of Cell Separation And Isolation

2023

Cell separation was first achieved in 1964 by S. H. Seal, who separated large tumor cells from the smaller blood cells using filtration. Two years later, Pohl and Hawk performed experiments on how cells respond differently to a nonuniform electric field based on the cell type. Such observations were the inception of cell separation methods, which allow isolating a single cell type from a heterogeneous sample. Commonly used cell separation techniques include filtration, density gradient...
