Rat Nerve Function

Rat nerve function refers to how peripheral and central nerves receive, transmit, and process electrical signals that coordinate sensation, movement, and organ activity. Neurons generate action potentials when membrane voltage changes, while ion channels and synapses regulate signal propagation between cells and neurotransmitter release at target tissues. In neuroscience, rats provide a well-established model for examining neural pathways, reflexes, sensory processing, motor control, and nerve injury. Measuring behavioral responses, electrical activity, or conduction along isolated nerves helps researchers relate cellular mechanisms to whole-animal function and evaluate potential treatments for neurological disorders.

2025

Source: Sanchez, C. A., et al. Preparation of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Electrodes for Chronic Implantation in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates vagus nerve stimulation in an awake rat. A rat with an implanted chronic peripheral nerve cuff electrode and trained in a lever press task is connected to a stimulus generator via an implanted head cap. The vagus nerve is stimulated immediately after each successful lever press, resulting in the expansion of the motor map.

We demonstrate a protocol for axoplasm isolation from adult rat sciatic nerve based on dissection of nerve fascicles and incubation in hypotonic medium to release myelin and lyse non-axonal structures, followed by extraction of the remaining axon-enriched material.

Construction of a Composite Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface in a Rat Model of Nerve Injury

Source: Svientek, S. R., et al. Fabrication of the Composite Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (C-RPNI) in the Adult Rat. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates the surgical construction of a composite regenerative peripheral nerve interface (C-RPNI) in a rat model of peripheral nerve injury. The procedure involves attaching a transected peroneal nerve to a muscle graft and overlaying it with a dermal skin graft to promote nerve regeneration. Over time, motor and sensory neurons...
