Runway Training Protocol

The Runway Training Protocol is a behavioral conditioning method that measures how animals learn to traverse a defined path toward a goal, making it useful for studying learning, motivation, and memory in neuroscience. During repeated trials, an animal encounters consistent environmental cues and a designated reward, while researchers record movement, approach latency, running speed, and performance across sessions. Changes in these measures reveal how experience, reinforcement, neural manipulation, or experimental conditions affect goal-directed behavior. The protocol provides a controlled framework for comparing acquisition and retention and can support investigations of reward processing, associative learning, and the neural circuits underlying motivated behavior.

Training and Competency in Animal Procedures

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. A Stepwise Approach to Training Proper training and competency in animal procedures are essential to ensure high standards of animal welfare and reliable scientific outcomes. A structured, progressive training approach is...
