Patient Compliance

Patient compliance is the extent to which a person follows a prescribed medication regimen, including the correct dose, timing, and treatment duration, making it a central consideration in pharmacology. It influences drug exposure because missed doses, incorrect intervals, or premature treatment cessation can alter plasma concentrations and prevent medicines from reaching or maintaining therapeutic levels. Pharmacologists and healthcare professionals assess compliance when interpreting treatment response, distinguishing medication failure from inadequate use, and designing patient-centered regimens. Improving compliance through clear instructions, counseling, regimen simplification, and follow-up can support therapeutic effectiveness, reduce avoidable complications, and strengthen the reliability of clinical research outcomes.

Exercise may alleviate behavioral impairments associated with neurodegenerative diseases. Studies of the mechanisms underlying exercise-mediated effects have increased in disease models, but the neurobiological background accompanying these diseases, specifically aging, is likely not considered. Here, we illustrate measures to increase the likelihood of a successful exercise paradigm in aged rats.

Source: Jaideep S. Talwalkar, MD, and Joseph Donroe, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT In order to optimize the predictive value of the physical examination, the provider must perform maneuvers correctly. The proper use of drapes is an important component of correctly performing physical examination maneuvers. Skin lesions are missed when "inspection" occurs through clothing, crackles are erroneously reported when the lungs are examined through a...
