Exercise Capacity

Exercise capacity is the greatest amount of physical work an individual can perform, reflecting the integrated function of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and skeletal-muscle systems. During graded exercise, rising metabolic demand increases cardiac output and ventilation, while muscles extract oxygen to produce ATP; measures such as peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak), workload, and exercise time quantify this response. In pharmacology, exercise-capacity testing reveals how drugs affecting heart rate, blood pressure, pulmonary function, or muscle metabolism alter functional performance. These measurements support dose evaluation, safety assessment, and treatment comparisons in cardiovascular, respiratory, and metabolic research.

Lung Capacity

2019

The air in the lungs is measured in volumes and capacities. Lung volume measures reflect the amount of air taken in, released, or left over after a lung function, like a single inhalation. Lung capacity measures are sums of two or more lung volume measures. There are four defined lung volume measures: tidal volume, inspiratory reserve volume, expiratory reserve volume, and residual volume. Tidal volume is the amount of air inhaled and exhaled in a normal breath. Inspiratory...

This protocol presents a method to assess pulmonary alveolar-capillary reserve measured by combined single-breath measurement of the diffusing capacity to carbon monoxide (DL,CO) and nitric oxide (DL,NO) during exercise. Assumptions and recommendations for using the technique during exercise form the foundation of this article.

Using Continuous Data Tracking Technology to Study Exercise Adherence in Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Cited by 7 •

2013

Pulmonary rehabilitation is widely recognized in the management of respiratory diseases. A key component to successful pulmonary rehabilitation is adherence to the recommended exercise training. The purpose of the present protocol is to describe how continuous data tracking technology can be used to precisely measure adherence to a prescribed aerobic training intensity.
