Delta Sleep

Delta sleep is the deepest stage of non-rapid eye movement sleep, characterized by slow, high-amplitude delta waves and reduced responsiveness to external stimuli. It occurs when synchronized activity across large populations of neurons produces rhythmic oscillations in the cerebral cortex, with breathing and heart rate generally slowing as muscle activity decreases. In psychology, delta sleep provides a framework for studying sleep architecture, restoration, memory processing, and changes associated with stress, aging, and sleep disorders. Measuring its duration and intensity through polysomnography helps researchers assess sleep quality and investigate how disrupted deep sleep may affect cognition, mood, and mental health.

The Delta-to-Delta Circuit

In a delta-delta configuration, the source and the load are connected in a delta manner, forming a closed loop that divides the network into three distinct phases. This configuration makes the phase voltages identical to line voltages. Assuming the sources are in positive sequence, the phase voltages can be expressed directly without having a neutral wire. The phase currents in a delta-connected load are calculated by dividing the phase voltage by the load impedance per phase: In this...

The recording of electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) in freely behaving mice is a critical step to correlate behavior and physiology with sleep and wakefulness. The experimental protocol described herein provides a cable-based system for acquiring EEG and EMG recordings in mice.

Quantitative Measurement of the Immune Response and Sleep in Drosophila

To understand a link between the immune response and behavior, we describe a method to measure locomotor behavior in Drosophila during bacterial infection as well as the ability of flies to mount an immune response by monitoring survival, bacterial load, and real-time activity of a key regulator of innate immunity, NFκB.

Intravital Visualization of Gamma Delta Intraepithelial Lymphocytes

2025

This video demonstrates the visualization of γδ intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) in transgenic mice using confocal microscopy. The surgical procedure involves creating a perforation line and making a longitudinal incision to expose the intestinal mucosa and villi. The transgenic mice express reporter proteins exclusively in γδ IELs, allowing their tracking. Intravital imaging captures the dynamic movement of green fluorescence-labeled γδ IELs along the intestinal epithelial cell's basement...
