Philip Zimbardo

Philip Zimbardo was an American psychologist whose research examined how social situations, institutions, and personal time perspectives influence human behavior. In the 1971 Stanford prison experiment, student volunteers were assigned prisoner or guard roles in a simulated prison, allowing Zimbardo to study how assigned roles, authority, and environmental conditions shaped interactions, although the study later faced substantial ethical and methodological criticism. His work influenced discussions of conformity, obedience, deindividuation, and research ethics, while his later writing on time perspective and heroism broadened psychology’s focus on how individuals can resist harmful situational pressures and make constructive choices.
