Lo scambio ionico separa le molecole cariche da una soluzione scambiandole in modo reversibile con ioni mobili, o "attivi", associati alla fase stazionaria caricata in modo opposto.
La fase stazionaria è solitamente un solido poroso ma insolubile, come i polimeri organici reticolati ad alto peso molecolare che hanno un gran numero di monomeri recanti gruppi funzionali ionici.
I polimeri anionici con cationi attivi sono scambiatori di cationi, mentre i polimeri cationici con anioni attivi sono scambiatori anionici.
Gli scambiatori cationici e anionici sono ulteriormente classificati come deboli e forti in base ai loro gruppi funzionali.
Gli ioni mobili attaccati agli scambiatori di ioni migrano nella soluzione e vengono sostituiti dagli ioni caricati in modo simile dalla soluzione fino al raggiungimento dell'equilibrio.
Applicando la legge massa-azione all'equilibrio di scambio ionico si esprime il coefficiente di selettività per la reazione.
Gli scambiatori cationici e anionici esausti vengono rigenerati lavandoli con un eccesso di soluzioni acide o basiche, rispettivamente.

Ion Exchange

La cromatografia a scambio ionico separa le molecole cariche da una soluzione scambiandole in modo reversibile con ioni mobili, o “attivi”, associati alla fase stazionaria caricata in modo opposto. Questo metodo può essere utilizzato per separare gli ioni, addolcire e deionizzare l'acqua e purificare le soluzioni. I polimeri che compongono la colonna a scambio ionico sono polimeri ad alto peso molecolare e chimicamente stabili, reticolati per essere porosi e sostanzialmente insolubili. Sono anche funzionalizzati con gruppi acidi o basici. Quando funzionalizzate con gruppi acidi, le colonne o la resina sono note come scambiatori cationici e contengono polimeri caricati negativamente con controioni positivi. Questi consentono lo scambio di cationi dalla fase mobile. Quando funzionalizzate con gruppi basici, le colonne o la resina sono note come scambiatori di anioni, che contengono polimeri caricati positivamente con controioni negativi e scambiano anioni dalla soluzione.

Durante lo scambio ionico, i controioni associati ai polimeri in fase solida entrano nella soluzione mentre gli ioni della soluzione interagiscono al loro posto con il polimero. Si noti che la capacità di scambiare ioni aumenta con l'aumentare dell'entità della reticolazione e con l'aumento del numero di gruppi a scambio ionico nel polimero. Questo scambio è reversibile e continua finché non viene stabilito l’equilibrio.

Gli scambiatori di cationi acidi possono essere funzionalizzati con acidi forti, come l'acido solfonico (−SO3H), visto nell'acido polistirensolfonico, o acidi deboli, come l'acido carbossilico (−COOH), visto nell'acido poli (metil metilacrilico). Ion exchange chromatography separates charged molecules from a solution by swapping them with mobile, or active, ions on a stationary phase. It is used to separate ions, soften and deionize water, and purify solutions. The method depends on a solid column made of high-molecular-weight, chemically stable polymers that are crosslinked to make them porous and essentially insoluble.

These polymers are functionalized with either acidic or basic groups. When acidic groups are present, the resin is a cation exchanger. It has a negatively charged polymer with positive counterions, so it can exchange cations from the mobile phase.

When basic groups are present, the resin is an anion exchanger. It has a positively charged polymer with negative counterions, so it can exchange anions from the solution. During ion exchange, the counterions on the solid polymer move into the solution, and ions from the solution take their place.

The exchange is reversible and continues until equilibrium is reached. The ability to exchange ions increases when the polymer has more crosslinking and more ion-exchange groups. Cation exchangers can be strong or weak. Strong cation exchangers often use sulfonic acid groups, such as in polystyrene sulfonic acid, while weak cation exchangers often use carboxylic acid groups, such as in poly(methyl methylacrylic) acid.

Anion exchangers are also classified as strong or weak. Strong anion exchangers often contain quaternary ammonium groups, such as in polystyrene quaternary ammonium chloride. Weak anion exchangers are often functionalized with substituted amines, such as in polystyrene tertiary amine hydroxide.
