Low Carbon Medium

Low carbon medium is a laboratory growth medium containing a deliberately limited amount of carbon-based nutrient, allowing researchers to examine how cells respond when carbon availability constrains metabolism. The reduced carbon supply limits substrate uptake and energy production, which can slow proliferation and shift cells toward resource conservation, alternative nutrient use, or stress-response pathways. In biochemistry, these media support studies of metabolic regulation, nutrient limitation, microbial survival, and carbon utilization. They also help researchers compare growth and biochemical activity under defined nutrient conditions, providing insight into how carbon availability influences cellular physiology and ecosystem-level nutrient cycling.

2025

Begin with a strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria, isolated from oil-contaminated soil, in a medium containing a nitrogen source and an excess of edible oil as the carbon source. This strain synthesizes polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), a long-chain polymer useful in producing bioplastics.Incubate under agitation to facilitate aeration and promote bacterial growth.Initially, the medium supplies both carbon and nitrogen sources to support bacterial proliferation and generate high biomass.After...

The Carbon Cycle

2019

Carbon is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and is recycled through the ecosystem in two primary processes: one in which carbon is exchanged among living organisms, and one in which carbon is cycled over long periods of time through fossilized organic remains, weathering of rocks, and volcanic activity. Human activities, including increased agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels, has greatly affected the balance of the natural carbon cycle. Biological Carbon Cycle All...

Organ Conditioned Medium: Generating Medium from Harvested Organ Cells for Metastatic Cancer Studies

2023

This video describes a method of generating an organ conditioned medium derived from the mouse liver. This model system can be used to identify and study organ-derived soluble factors and their effects on the organ tropism and metastatic behavior of cancer cells.

A Method for Generating Oligodendrocyte-Conditioned Medium

2025

This video demonstrates the production of oligodendrocyte-conditioned medium (OCM) from oligodendrocyte lineage cells by stressing them to enhance their molecular release into the medium. This medium, which is rich in growth factors, cytokines, and other bioactive molecules, can be added to neuron cultures to gain insight into the impact of oligodendrocytes-secreted factors on neuronal physiology and connectivity.
