Cardiac Biobanking

Cardiac biobanking is the systematic collection, processing, storage, and documentation of heart-related biospecimens for research and clinical investigation. Samples such as cardiac tissue, blood, DNA, and patient-derived cells are preserved under controlled conditions and linked with clinical, molecular, and demographic data while ethical consent and quality standards support responsible use. In bioengineering, these resources help researchers develop cardiac tissue models, study disease mechanisms, evaluate biomaterials and therapies, and improve regenerative medicine strategies. Well-characterized biobanks also enable reproducible studies by connecting biological specimens with patient outcomes, advancing personalized approaches to cardiovascular research.

Presented here is a set of protocols for the generation and cryopreservation of cardiac spheroids (CSs) from human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes cultured in a high-throughput, multidimensional format. This three-dimensional model functions as a robust platform for disease modeling, high-throughput screenings, and maintains its functionality after cryopreservation.

Sampling Prostate Cancer Tissue for Biobanking: An MRI-guided Targeted Technique to Remove Biopsy Punches from Fresh Tumor Tissue

Streptococcus pneumoniae forms discrete non-purulent microscopic lesions in the heart. Outlined is the protocol for a murine model of cardiac microlesion formation. Instruction is provided on microlesion visualization using microscopy, discrimination between early and late microlesions, and methods to detect cardiac remodeling in hearts of convalescent animals.
