Osteotomy Procedure

An osteotomy procedure is a surgical technique that cuts and reshapes bone to correct alignment, redistribute mechanical loads, or improve joint function. Surgeons create a planned bone cut using imaging and patient-specific measurements, reposition the resulting segments, and stabilize them with fixation devices while healing restores structural continuity. In bioengineering, osteotomy provides a practical setting for studying bone mechanics, implant design, surgical planning, and tissue regeneration. Applications include correcting skeletal deformities, treating malalignment-related joint disease, and evaluating computational models or biomaterials intended to improve accuracy, stability, and recovery after bone reconstruction.

One constraint of preclinical research in the field of bone repair is the lack of experimental control over the local mechanical environment within a healing bone lesion. We report the design and use of an external fixator for bone repair with the ability to change fixator stiffness in vivo.

Protocol for Developing a Femur Osteotomy Model in Wistar Albino Rats

Here, we present a protocol to iatrogenically fracture the shaft of the femur of Wistar albino rats and follow up on the development of the callus. This femur osteotomy model can help researchers evaluate the process of fracture healing and to study how a drug could influence fracture healing.

Stabilizing a Femur Osteotomy with a Plate Fixation in Ambystoma mexicanum
