Porcine Stromal Cells

Porcine stromal cells are supportive connective-tissue cells isolated from pigs that help organize, maintain, and repair tissue environments. They produce extracellular matrix components and release signaling molecules that influence cell adhesion, proliferation, differentiation, and immune interactions, making them active participants in tissue organization rather than passive scaffolding. In bioengineering, porcine stromal cells provide a relevant model for studying cell-matrix interactions and can contribute to engineered tissues, biomaterial evaluation, and regenerative medicine research. Their biological similarity to human tissues, combined with accessible large-animal sources, supports translational studies of scaffold design, vascularization, and tissue repair while highlighting species-specific responses that require careful evaluation.

This video demonstrates a non-invasive laser-assisted procedure to selectively damage the corneal endothelial cells in the porcine eye. The developed ex vivo model of endothelial cell damage can be used to study diseases of the corneal endothelium.

Generating Schwann Cell-Like Cells from Bone Marrow Stromal Cells

2025

This video demonstrates a method for obtaining Schwann cell-like cells from multipotent bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs). Initially, the BMSCs undergo hypoxia treatment, followed by directed differentiation into neuronal progenitor cells. Subsequently, specific media and culture conditions are employed to induce the transformation of these progenitor cells into Schwann cell-like cells.

This protocol describes the isolation of pig adipose-derived stem cells (pADSC) from subcutaneous adipose tissues with examination of multipotency. The multipotent pADSC are used to delineate processes of adipocyte differentiation and study transdifferentiation into multiple cell lineages of mesodermal mesenchyme or further lineages of ectoderm and endoderm for regenerative studies.
