Miniature Pig Model

A miniature pig model is a purpose-bred small swine model used to study biological processes, disease mechanisms, and responses to medical interventions in a living organism. Its value arises from the pig’s anatomical, physiological, and metabolic similarities to humans, while its smaller size supports practical housing, handling, and longitudinal monitoring. Researchers use miniature pigs in studies of development, cardiovascular function, metabolism, skin, dental biology, and tissue repair, applying controlled procedures and measurable biological endpoints to evaluate outcomes. These models can strengthen translational research by linking laboratory findings with whole-organism responses before clinical investigation.

Miniature pigs (mini-pigs) are an ideal large animal model for research into cochlear implants. Cochlear implantation surgery in mini-pigs can be utilized to provide initial evidence of the safety and potential performance of novel electrode arrays and surgical approaches in a living system similar to human beings.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Administration of medications, experimental drugs, and other test substances in pigs requires an appropriate route based on study objectives, compound properties, and animal welfare considerations. Noninvasive delivery through...
