Mosquito Sensory Cues

Mosquito sensory cues are environmental signals that guide mosquitoes toward hosts, breeding sites, and suitable habitats, making them central to mosquito behavior and disease transmission. Specialized receptors detect carbon dioxide in exhaled breath, body odors, heat, humidity, and visual contrasts, while the nervous system integrates these inputs to control orientation, landing, feeding, and egg-laying decisions. Understanding how mosquitoes combine sensory information helps explain host preference and daily activity patterns. This knowledge supports the development of traps, repellents, surveillance tools, and other strategies for reducing mosquito populations and limiting the spread of mosquito-borne pathogens.

Spatial Cueing

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Attention refers to the limited human ability to select some information for processing at the expense of other stimuli in the environment. Attention operates in all sensory modalities: vision, hearing, touch, even taste and smell. It is most often studied in the visual domain though. A common way to study visual attention is with a spatial cueing paradigm. This paradigm allows researchers to measure the consequences of focusing...

What is a Sensory System?

2019

Sensory systems detect stimuli—such as light and sound waves—and transduce them into neural signals that can be interpreted by the nervous system. In addition to external stimuli detected by the senses, some sensory systems detect internal stimuli—such as the proprioceptors in muscles and tendons that send feedback about limb position. Sensory systems include the visual, auditory, gustatory (taste), olfactory (smell), somatosensory (touch, pain, temperature, and proprioception), and vestibular...

Primary sensory modalities include pain, temperature, light touch, vibration, and joint position sense. Sensation of the face is discussed in the videos Cranial Nerves Exam I and II, as are the special senses of smell, vision, taste, and...

Mosquito Feeding Assay: A Method to Evaluate Test Compound Effects on Mortality and Fecundity of Adult Female Mosquitoes

2025

This video demonstrates a blood-feeding assay to evaluate the mortality and fecundity of test compounds with novel modes of action on female mosquitoes. This technique helps in screening new classes of insecticides to kill the resistant population of mosquitoes and control disease spread.
