Porcine Kidney

The porcine kidney is a mammalian organ that maintains fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance while removing metabolic waste from the blood, making it a valuable subject in comparative biology and biomedical research. Within each kidney, nephrons filter blood through glomeruli, then selectively reabsorb water and essential solutes and secrete additional waste along renal tubules to produce urine. Porcine kidneys closely resemble human kidneys in size, organization, and physiological function, supporting studies of renal development, filtration, disease, and drug effects. They also provide important models for surgical training, organ preservation, and investigations of xenotransplantation and regenerative medicine.
