Intraventricular Catheter

An intraventricular catheter is a sterile tube placed into a brain ventricle to access cerebrospinal fluid, enabling controlled delivery or collection within the central nervous system. The catheter enters the ventricular system through a neurosurgical opening and may connect to a reservoir or external device, allowing fluids, drugs, or samples to move between the ventricle and the outside environment. In cancer research, this approach supports intrathecal administration of chemotherapy, targeted agents, and experimental treatments while enabling analysis of cerebrospinal fluid for tumor-associated biomarkers. It is particularly valuable for studying brain tumors, leptomeningeal disease, drug distribution, treatment response, and barriers to effective therapy.

Modeling Neonatal Intraventricular Hemorrhage Through Intraventricular Injection of Hemoglobin

2025

This video demonstrates a method to generate a rat model of neonatal intraventricular hemorrhage. In this procedure, an anesthetized rat pup is injected with hemoglobin into the lateral ventricle of the brain. The hemoglobin causes oxidative stress and releases heme, simulating intraventricular hemorrhage. The resulting damage to brain tissues, driven by reactive oxygen species and inflammatory cytokines, leads to ventricular enlargement, a common consequence of intraventricular hemorrhage.

Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Insertion

2023

Source: Madeline Lassche, MSNEd, RN and Katie Baraki, MSN, RN, College of Nursing, University of Utah, UT The purpose of peripheral intravenous catheter (PIV) insertion is to infuse medications, perform intravenous (IV) fluid therapy, or inject radioactive tracers for special examination procedures. Placing a PIV is an invasive procedure and requires the use of an aseptic, no-touch technique. Common IV venipuncture sites are the arms and hands in adults and the feet in children. According to...

Direct Intraventricular Delivery of Drugs to the Rodent Central Nervous System

We describe a method to target drugs to the central nervous system by either implanting a catheter or performing a bolus injection into the right lateral ventricle in mice. We focus specifically on the delivery of antisense oligonucleotides. This technique is readily adaptable to other drugs and to rats.
