Porous Medium

A porous medium is a solid or material containing interconnected voids, or pores, that allow fluids, gases, or dissolved substances to occupy and move through its structure. In chemistry, transport depends on pore size, connectivity, surface chemistry, and interactions such as diffusion, adsorption, and capillary forces; these factors determine how molecules enter, travel through, and sometimes react within the medium. Porous media support catalysis, chromatography, filtration, and controlled separation by providing large internal surface areas and selective pathways, while their structure influences reaction rates, mass transfer, and the design of functional materials.

This video showcases the development and differentiation of human neural stem cells within a three-dimensional scaffold. A laminin coating on the scaffold promotes cell attachment, while a growth factor-free neural medium induces cell differentiation into neural progenitor cells, which extend their processes within a porous architecture in multiple directions, forming a three-dimensional...

Supercritical Nitrogen Processing for the Purification of Reactive Porous Materials

Nitrogen is an effective supercritical fluid for extraction or drying processes due to its small molecular size, high density in the near-liquid supercritical regime, and chemical inertness. We present a supercritical nitrogen drying protocol for the purification treatment of reactive, porous materials.
