Separatory Funnel

A separatory funnel is a laboratory vessel used to separate immiscible liquids, making it essential for liquid-liquid extraction and purification in chemistry. When a mixture settles, gravity forms distinct layers according to the liquids’ densities, while a stopcock allows the lower phase to drain selectively; repeated mixing and settling can transfer a dissolved compound between the two solvents. Chemists use separatory funnels to isolate organic products, remove aqueous impurities, and wash reaction mixtures. Correct identification of the layers, controlled venting during mixing, and careful phase separation improve recovery, purity, and reproducibility in synthetic and analytical procedures.

Source: Lara Al Hariri and Ahmed Basabrain at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, MA, USA Cellulose RecoveryExpand Extraction and filtration can separate compounds based on their solubility properties. In this lab, you'll separate a mixture of cellulose, caffeine, and benzoic acid based on their solubilities in dichloromethane, or DCM, and water. Caffeine and benzoic acid are both soluble in DCM, but cellulose is not. Thus, in this part, you'll first dissolve as much of the mixture as...
