Fitted Respirator

A fitted respirator is a respiratory protective device designed to form a close seal with the wearer’s face, limiting inhalation of airborne particles, droplets, or other hazardous contaminants. Its effectiveness depends on the interaction between the respirator’s filter or cartridge and an uninterrupted face seal, which must be verified through fit testing and maintained during use. In clinical settings, fitted respirators help protect healthcare personnel during procedures that may generate infectious aerosols, particularly when caring for patients with airborne diseases. Proper selection, fitting, user seal checks, and adherence to infection-control protocols improve protection and reduce occupational exposure.

2012

Quantitative Fitness Analysis (QFA) is a complementary series of experimental and computational methods for estimating microbial culture fitnesses. QFA estimates the effect of genetic mutations, drugs or other applied treatments on microbe growth. Experiments scaling from focussed analysis of single cultures to thousands of parallel cultures can be designed.

Inclusive Fitness

2025

Most altruistic behavior—in which one animal helps another at a cost to themselves—occurs between relatives. Scientists think these altruistic behaviors evolved because they increase the inclusive fitness of the animal providing help. Inclusive fitness is an individual’s ability to pass down their genes—both through their offspring and the offspring of close relatives with shared genes. If an animal helps a close relative improve their reproductive success, this increases the animal’s...

Goodness-of-Fit Test

2025

The goodness-of-fit test is a type of hypothesis test which determines whether the data "fits" a particular distribution. For example, one may suspect that some anonymous data may fit a binomial distribution. A chi-square test (meaning the distribution for the hypothesis test is chi-square) can be used to determine if there is a fit. The null and alternative hypotheses may be written in sentences or stated as equations or inequalities. The test statistic for a goodness-of-fit test is given as...

Source: Suneel Dhand, MD, Attending Physician, Internal Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Disorders of the respiratory system with a chief complaint of shortness of breath are among the most common reasons for both outpatient and inpatient evaluation. The most obvious visible clue to a respiratory problem will be whether the patient is displaying any signs of respiratory distress, such as fast respiratory rate and/or cyanosis. In a clinical situation, this will always require...
