Intensive Care Units

Intensive care units (ICUs) are specialized hospital settings that provide continuous monitoring and advanced treatment for patients with life-threatening illness, injury, or organ failure. Critical care teams use bedside assessment, hemodynamic monitoring, ventilators, infusion pumps, and other life-support technologies to detect rapid physiological changes and stabilize breathing, circulation, and organ function. ICUs support patients after major surgery, trauma, severe infection, and acute respiratory or cardiovascular failure, while enabling coordinated decisions among physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other specialists. Their practices also advance clinical research on patient monitoring, mechanical ventilation, infection control, and recovery from critical illness.

Electrical Impedance Tomography is a non-invasive, radiation-free, real-time pulmonary ventilation monitoring tool. By measuring impedance changes in the thorax, it can visualize the distribution of air on a breath-by-breath basis. Initially intended for ventilation monitoring, electrical impedance tomography can also measure perfusion via intravenous injection of a saline solution.

Presented here is a protocol to perform comprehensive neonatal echocardiography by trained neonatologists in the neonatal intensive care unit. The trained individuals provide longitudinal assessments of heart function, systemic and pulmonary hemodynamics in a consultative role. The manuscript also describes the requirements to become a fully trained neonatal hemodynamics specialist.
