Early Effect

The Early effect is a phenomenon in bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) in which collector current changes with collector-emitter voltage, even when base current is held constant. As the collector-base reverse bias increases, its depletion region widens into the base, reducing the effective base width and increasing carrier transport from the emitter to the collector; this process is known as base-width modulation. The effect gives a BJT a finite output resistance and introduces a slope in its output characteristics, influencing voltage gain, amplification linearity, and bias stability. Engineers account for it using the Early voltage in transistor models and analog circuit design.

Here, we present a protocol to quantify allergen-loaded particles by flow cytometry. Ambient particulate matter particles may act as carriers of adsorbed allergens. We show here that flow cytometry, a method widely used to characterize suspended solids >0.5 µm in diameter, can be used to measure these allergen-loaded particles.
