Metacenter Height

Metacenter height is a key measure of the initial stability of a floating body, especially ships and marine structures, describing the vertical distance between the center of gravity and the metacenter. When a vessel heels slightly, its underwater volume changes shape and the center of buoyancy shifts; the resulting buoyant force acts through the metacenter, creating a restoring or overturning moment depending on the vessel’s geometry and center of gravity. A positive metacentric height generally indicates stable equilibrium, while a small or negative value signals reduced stability or potential capsizing. Engineers use metacenter height to evaluate loading conditions, design hulls, and improve safety in marine operations.

2017

Multilayer microfluidic devices often involve the fabrication of master molds with complex geometries for functionality. This article presents a complete protocol for multi-step photolithography with valves and variable height features tunable to any application. As a demonstration, we fabricate a microfluidic droplet generator capable of producing hydrogel beads.

Sit-to-stand-and-walk from 120% Knee Height: A Novel Approach to Assess Dynamic Postural Control Independent of Lead-limb

Here, we present a novel protocol to measure positional stability at key events during the sit-to-stand-to-walk using the center-of-pressure to the whole-body-center-of-mass distance. This was derived from the force platform and three-dimensional motion-capture technology. The paradigm is reliable and can be utilized for the assessment of neurologically compromised individuals.

2023

Source: Alexander S Rattner and Kevin Rao Li Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The objective of this experiment is to demonstrate the phenomenon of stability of floating vessels - the ability to self-right when rolled over to the side by some external force. Careful design of hull shapes and internal mass distribution enables seagoing vessels to be stable with low drafts (submerged depth of hull), improving vessel...

Energy is one of the most important concepts in science and is not simple to define. This experiment will deal with two different kinds of energy: gravitational potential energy and translational kinetic energy. Gravitational potential energy is defined as the energy an object...

Pitot-static Tube: A Device to Measure Air Flow Speed

2023

Source: David Guo, College of Engineering, Technology, and Aeronautics (CETA), Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), Manchester, New Hampshire A Pitot-static tube is widely used for measuring unknown speeds in air flow, for example, it is used to measure airplane airspeed. By Bernoulli's principle, airspeed is directly related to variations in pressure. Therefore, the Pitot-static tube senses the stagnation pressure and static pressure. It is connected to a manometer or pressure transducer...
