Particle Size Distribution

Particle Size Distribution describes the range of particle sizes in a material and the proportion of particles at each size, making it essential for predicting how powders, granules, suspensions, and soils behave in engineering systems. Engineers determine the distribution by separating particles according to size, as in sieve analysis, or by measuring size-dependent responses using methods such as laser diffraction or sedimentation. The resulting profile helps evaluate packing, flowability, dissolution, filtration, settling, and reaction performance. In fields including chemical, civil, pharmaceutical, and materials engineering, particle size distribution supports quality control, process optimization, equipment selection, and the design of consistent products.

We demonstrate how to determine the size distribution of semiconductor nanocrystals in a quantitative manner using Raman spectroscopy employing an analytically defined multi-particle phonon confinement model. Results obtained are in excellent agreement with the other size analysis techniques like transmission electron microscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy.

Pore Size Distribution

2024

In concrete, the pore size distribution significantly influences the material's properties. Capillary pores, markedly larger than gel pores, form a vast network within partially hydrated cement paste, reducing the concrete's strength and increasing its permeability. This heightened permeability leads to a greater risk of damage from environmental factors like freeze-thaw cycles and chemical attacks, with the extent of vulnerability also being tied to the water-to-cement ratio. Adequate...
