Solid Silicon Mac-imprint

Solid Silicon Mac-imprint is an engineering fabrication approach that forms microscale or nanoscale patterns in bulk silicon, a material central to sensors, microelectronics, and microsystems. The process uses a patterned mold or stamp to transfer surface features into solid silicon, typically through controlled pressure and temperature, followed by selective etching or material removal that defines the intended structures. This method can produce repeatable channels, cavities, and other high-resolution features while reducing reliance on conventional lithographic patterning. Its applications include microelectromechanical systems, semiconductor devices, optical components, and integrated sensors, where precise silicon geometry determines device performance, reliability, and manufacturing scalability.

Imprinting

2019

Behavioral imprinting is observed in some newborn animals and occurs when they develop strong and specific attachments to another animal (usually a parent) following brief, early-life exposures. Offspring imprint onto parents within a brief period after birth or hatching; this time window is called the critical period. Once imprinting occurs, the bond established between the parents and their offspring is usually long-lasting. Survival Mother sheep imprint onto the scent of their lambs within...

Genomic Imprinting and Inheritance

Diploid organisms inherit genetic material through chromosomes from both parents. Copies of the same gene are known as alleles. In most cases, both alleles are simultaneously expressed and allow various cellular processes to function optimally. If one of the alleles is missing or mutated, the expression of the other allele can compensate; however, this is not true for all genes. The expression of some genes depends on which parent passed the gene to the offspring, through a phenomenon known as...

Network Covalent Solids

Network covalent solids contain a three-dimensional network of covalently bonded atoms as found in the crystal structures of nonmetals like diamond, graphite, silicon, and some covalent compounds, such as silicon dioxide (sand) and silicon carbide (carborundum, the abrasive on sandpaper). Many minerals have networks of covalent bonds. To break or to melt a covalent network solid, covalent bonds must be broken. Because covalent bonds are relatively strong, covalent network solids are typically...
