Glycerol Casein Media

Glycerol casein media are microbiological culture media that combine glycerol as a carbon source with casein, a protein substrate, to support and differentiate microorganisms. In these media, microorganisms metabolize glycerol for growth while secreted proteases hydrolyze casein into smaller peptides and amino acids; this activity can produce a visible clearing zone around colonies. In environmental sciences, glycerol casein media help culture and screen microorganisms from soil, water, or other samples for extracellular proteolytic activity, supporting studies of microbial function, nutrient cycling, and biotechnological potential.

2026

Here, we present a simple and low-cost glycerol displacement method based on Archimedes' principle for measuring lead-acid battery electrode porosities. The method demonstrates good reproducibility and is safer than traditional techniques, requiring low-hazard chemicals and equipment. Combining the technique with microstructural analysis by X-ray diffraction provides information on battery electrode properties and degradation.
