Bimanual Microsurgery

Bimanual microsurgery is a microsurgical technique in which the surgeon uses both hands to manipulate fine instruments within a magnified operative field, enabling precise treatment of delicate anatomical structures. Under an operating microscope, one hand may provide traction, countertraction, or stabilization while the other dissects, cuts, or sutures, allowing coordinated control of tissue and instruments at a small scale. This approach supports procedures in ophthalmology, neurosurgery, vascular surgery, and reconstructive medicine, where accuracy and minimal tissue trauma are essential. Training in bimanual coordination, instrument handling, and microsuturing helps improve procedural control and outcomes in complex surgical repair.

Talwalkar, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT A bimanual exam is a thorough check of a patient's cervix, uterus, and ovaries. It can tell an experienced provider a great deal, as it may lead to the discovery of abnormalities, such as cysts, fibroids, or malignancies. However, it's useful even in the absence of such findings, as it...

Here, we describe a pre-clinical animal model for studying the pathophysiology of ischemia-reperfusion injury in reconstructive microsurgery. This free skin flap model based on the superficial caudal epigastric vessels in the rat may also allow for the evaluation of different therapies and compounds to counteract ischemia-reperfusion injury-related damage.
